New York/Stuttgart – Eardrum repair, called tympanoplasty, is a procedure to correct a tear in the eardrum (tympanic membrane). The use of cartilage in major reconstruction of the tympanic membrane has become increasingly recognized. Studies comparing cartilage to more traditional grafting materials have shown no difference in hearing post-operatively. Cartilage Tympanoplasty, published by Thieme, is the first of its kind in this field.

"I was astounded by Mirko Tos' ability to provide such a comprehensive treatise of techniques, from so many different surgeons, and explain them in a way that only an experienced ear surgeon could. I read this book from cover to cover and learned a great deal," states John Dornhoffer, MD, FACS, Professor of Otolaryngology and Director of Otology and Neurotology at the University of Arkansas, Littler Rock, Arkansas.

Cartilage Tympanoplasty is remarkable, not only in its content, but also in its presentation. This 450 plus page book has more than 1,100 illustrations, most of which were created specifically for the text with the assistance of the author. "I sketched each illustration in pencil on parchment paper, then the artist, Regitze Steinbruch, copied it and redrew it in ink on another parchment," explains author Mirko Tos, MD.

This book provides step-by-step demonstrations of surgical techniques and clinical insights from the author, a pioneer, and one of the most influential medical professionals in his field.
